Artist's Description

I spend a good deal of time in the Lake of the Ozarks. One of the most picturesque areas is Ha Ha Tonka State Park. Cliff Overlooking Lake is drawn from the balcony of the stone ruins of the Robert Snyders mansion located in this park.

In the early 1900s, the wealthy Kansas City businessman purchased 5,000 acres that included a spring-fed lake. He selected a site on the rocky summit above for his retirement home, saying, I will fish and loaf and explore the caves of these hills, with no fear of intrusion.

But just as imported Scottish stone masons began work on his dream, Snyder died in 1906 in one of the states first automobile fatalities. His sons finished the home, but it was gutted by fire in 1942. The stone skeleton of Snyders European-style castle sits like a rock sculpture, with a sweeping view of the Lake of the Ozarks far below.

About Michele Fritz

Michele Fritz

Growing up in the rolling hills of Missouri, I've traveled to most states in the U.S. and painted along the way. I love being in nature and try to visit state parks along my travel routes. I work mostly in my studio, using field studies and photo references pulled from places I have visited. In creating these works, I sometimes embrace, sometimes abandon color theory while building an ever growing alphabet of marks that represent foliage, trees, buildings and the sky. I juxtapose these marks with textures, tones, and line to build a compressed space, create the illusion of great distances, and generate an energized surface crackling with potential.
