About Michele Fritz
I create pastel paintings of landscapes dominated by quirky pathways, stacked perspective and exaggerated brilliant blooming color. The perspective in my art is purposefully wonky with visually important forms teetering on top of solid, more grounded shapes giving the work an edgy, anxious feel.
I create scenes by appropriating and combining bits of real places that strike a chord with me; vivid memories of a place that feels magical and could easily be scenery for a classic children's tale. My window sized artworks are like portals into another world where characters from the minds of Lewis Carroll or L. Frank Baum could appear at any moment on their way to a new adventure.
Growing up in the rolling hills of Missouri, I've traveled to most states in the U.S. and painted along the way. I love being in nature and try to visit state parks along my travel routes. I began my current series of works in the winter when the thermometer read -5. I longed for weekends at the lake and to drive winding roads around mountains and blooming meadows. I work mostly in my studio, using field studies and photo references pulled from places I have visited. In creating these works, I sometimes embrace, sometimes abandon color theory while building an ever growing alphabet of marks that represent foliage, trees, buildings and the sky. I juxtapose these marks with textures, tones, and line to build a compressed space, create the illusion of great distances, and generate an energized surface crackling with potential.
